Period poverty isn’t just a hygiene issue — it’s a gender equality, education and human rights issue.
Period Poverty
What Period Poverty Means?
Period poverty refers to the lack of affordable access to menstrual products, safe sanitation, and accurate menstrual health information. It also encompasses the stigma and cultural taboos that restrict girls’ and women’s participation in education, work, and everyday life during their menstrual cycles.
- Over 80% of schoolgirls in low-income areas lack access to menstrual products.
- Around 7 million girls & women struggle to afford/access sanitary products.
- Roughly 4 million South Africans experience period poverty.
- 1 in 4 learners miss school monthly due to lack of menstrual hygiene products.
We advocate for an Africa where everyone enjoys sanitary dignity.
